The Desert Eagle is a large semi-automatic pistol that was designed by Magnum Research Inc. and manufactured mostly by IMI (Israel Military Industries) as well as a variety of US makers.

 

It is famously chambered for large rounds such as the .357 and 44 magnum cartridges and even a .50, so for an auto loading pistol it packs a punch larger than most.  It has a gas operated mechanism more like that of a rifle, which is what allows it to cycle rounds much larger than a smaller auto loading pistol.

Its bulk and the accompanying issues around practical carriage and field use (and some reliability issues) make it unsuited as a general issue Military or Police weapon, but it is a spectacular weapon to fire and see on the big screen.
