The famous AK47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova) was ready for Soviet military service in 1947 having been designed by Russian WW2 combat veteran Mikhail Kalashnikov.

 

It has since become one of the most recognisable and widely distributed combat rifles of all time used by Soviet and Eastern Block forces in the Cold War, The Viet Cong in the Vietnam War and numerous Armies and Irregular Forces ever since.  

 

The AK47 is a hybrid of weapon innovations integrated by its designer to draw upon the best of the American M1 and German WW2 StG44.  He was determined to make a reliable weapon for the soldier, and as a former Soviet soldier he was determined for it to be a simple and reliable assault rifle.

 

It is a dependable gas operated 7.62 x 39 selective fire weapon with timber stocks, a 30 round magazine and has the benefit of being easy and fast to manufacture.  It also has a high tolerance for battlefield conditions, varying temperatures and rough treatment making it a durable combat rifle. 

 

Whilst originally a Soviet / Russian rifle, it has been made in many variations under license and also copied by many other nations.
